If Toys Could Talk

Robin Neifield Thursday, September 24th, 2009

I keep a couple of toys on my desk. It has nothing to do with my lack of maturity or attention span and everything to do with the mindless fidgeting that seems to unleash my creative side. There are probably studies that would support this theory though I can’t name them.

One of my favorite toys is a bunch of magnets in straight links and balls that can be arranged and rearranged in any manner of ways. Lately I have kept it at the front of my desk and have been fascinated by the various ways that people interact with the toy when they come to my office. What does your play style say about you?

  • The construction engineer – this person takes the magnets and arranges them in a logical, symmetrical pattern. They seem to take it personally if the odd leftover piece ruins their masterpiece. Strangely this group seems to think in only one dimension and all their designs are flat to the desk surface.
  • The aspirationalist- constructs wildly imaginative and often vertical towers, they often try to bend the straight line and ball format into something less conventional — with mixed success I might add.
  • The demolition expert – grabs the magnets in their current configuration and squeezes away all form or function into an irregular mass. Not sure what they are trying for but it usually results in one or two balls drifting off the desk and onto the floor. They seem so satisfied.
  • The action hero – uses the physical properties of these strong magnets to create movement without contact. They will construct wheels with spokes and wands to spin them around on the desk or create battles of attraction or repelling between magnets placed just-so far apart.
  • The scientist – creates their own experiments, Often linking straight magnets and ball magnets in a long line to test how many they can add and hold up in the air until the line breaks.

I am sure none of this is conscious. But interestingly, most people fall into the same activities repeatedly. I wonder if these match any behavioral marketing personas or if this is simply another lesson that people are different? They approach their lives differently and may need different cues, tools, content and other options in the websites they visit and applications they use. Lesson learned — the fun way.

Mergers That Wouldn’t Suck

Dave Larkins Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

Most mergers are boring.  They seem exciting at the time. AOL buys Time Warner!!  Google buys YouTube!!  Imagine the possibilities!  They buy them for advertising.  Its like one huge media buy.  Here are some less traditional mergers I would really like to see happen:

  1. Apple buys Black & Decker.  I’ll be the first in line for the iHammer.  I have no idea what it will do but I’m buying it
  2. NetPlus buys Chipotle.  Please tell me how burritos would not help us win pitches.
  3. Microsoft buys Nissan.  Seriously, lets stop screwing around with this SYNC stuff and get down to business.
  4. Nintendo buys Southwest Airlines.  Game planes people, game planes.
  5. Apple buys Barnes and Noble.  Sorry to use Apple again, but the thought of merging the Apple Store with an awesome bookstore makes me happy.
  6. Dreamworks buys Starbucks.  Movie Magic + Coffee = Yes
  7. Philadelphia Eagles buy Philadelphia 76’ers.  Constant stream of tight ends and wide receivers.
  8. Apple buys Whole Foods.  Sorry, I have no control over it.
  9. Trader Joe’s buys TGI Fridays.

Love to see any of those.  You got any?

A Connected Day at the Beach

Robin Neifield Sunday, August 23rd, 2009

Sat on the beach today and read for hours on my Kindle, checked the weather on the included browser and then used my iphone to check my email, text my kids and tweet my friends. Probably no one knows more about me than Amazon and ATT yet the only advertising I was exposed to came by blimp overhead or the banners that trail after an airplane. Are we at the point where we can no longer take that for granted? Can you envision a day when every single time you use a connected device of any kind it will be accompanied by a targeted commercial message?

I hope it doesn’t happen. I hope the value of the content and connectedness does not always come with a price tag because I fear a consumer backlash – rational or otherwise- against all advertising content if we as an industry overstep our boundaries and fatigue our consumer base. It was a beautiful day BTW.

Tradeshows, Conferences: Where to Spend your Money

Denise Zimmerman Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

Travel budgets are slashed, resources are tight, you are already running ragged…but the business of digital marketing still moves forward at a break neck speed. How do you keep up? Are tradeshows and conferences still viable? If so, how do you choose?

I have a few must attend events just like others here do at NetPlus. My first priority is of course those organizations that I am most involved with, whether it be on a committee, as a content contributor and so forth. These also tend to be the most valuable to me by way of content and relationships. So my two must attends are iMedia and shop.org. They continue to add value to NetPlus, our clients and offer opportunities that fit my and NetPlus respective needs. Others on the list here are Ad:Tech, OMMA, SXSW, SES and so forth, as folks here contribute or have particular expertise focus on that practice area.

The key points to allocating your time and resources is to determine what events best meet your objectives and will help you advance your business and/or professional goals. Be prepared to justify it to whomever you need budget approval from. If for example, you have clearly defined needs in terms of solution providers, then an event with a trade floor such as Ad:Tech may be a priority and you can justify it by reducing time spent identifying qualified providers and evaluating price, competition, etc.

If there is no budget at all or even if it is limited, other options to advance your learning and your business include the following:

  1. Webex – there are more of these now in response to the decline in live event attendence and shrinking travel budgets.
  2. Ask of your agency partners and solution providers – they have to be in the trenches, read the trades, blogs, etc. as part of their business. Making you smarter should be part of their mission.
  3. Of course, continue to follow, sign-up and read the industry news. Be selective and focused on what will best serve your needs.
